Free Breast Pump Through Insurance

Many companies are advertising that they offer moms a free breast pump – but what does this really mean? As an informed consumer, you know that nothing is ever really 100% “free”. How are these companies advertising for this? If you’re not paying for the pump, who is?

Most “free breast pumps” are actually covered at no out-of-pocket cost to you by your health insurance company. Per the Affordable Care Act, breastfeeding supplies and equipment should be covered as a preventative benefit for women – and therefore come at no out of pocket burden. This is great news for mommies to be, as pumps can be upwards of 300 dollars and are not affordable for a lot of families.

Saying moms can receive a free breast pump is a bit misleading. You pay for your health insurance, and your health insurance pays for this benefit. Most pumps are covered at no out of pocket cost, but some will be considered upgrades and have an out of pocket fee. These fees stem from items not billable to insurance (such as bags, batteries, coolers, ice packs, etc, such as what comes with the Medela Freestyle).  Since there are no codes for these items, and they are not billable to insurance the companies that pay for them will not be adequately reimbursed without billing the patient.

Breast pumps are being covered (as well as breastfeeding equipment and supplies) by health insurance companies because breast milk is so important to a child’s health and development. Since not every mother can conventionally breastfeed, it is imperative that there is easy access to pumps. Without access to breast pumps, mothers of children in the NICU or who have other issues that prevent a successful breastfeeding experience, would not be able to offer such a great resource to their child at all.
