Spotting and Bleeding During Pregnancy

While spotting and bleeding can be a sign of something more serious during a woman’s pregnancy, it is not always cause for concern.  It can actually be a very ordinary part of the natural process of developing your own little person inside of you.  In fact, according to the American Pregnancy Association, 20% of women state they have suffered from spotting in their first 12 weeks of gestation.  Before you panic just know that there are several harmless reasons you might be spotting and bleeding during pregnancy.

One of the most common reasons for spotting and bleeding during pregnancy is implantation bleeding.  This is when the fertilized egg is busy burying into your uterus which usually happens when your period is suspected to come or soon after.  Believe it or not, sex or even a visit to the gyno can cause you to spot.  Increased estrogen levels cause more blood vessels around the cervix which may rupture after getting “frisky” when your partner or being examined by your doc.  Uncomfortable and alarming but pretty harmless for the most part.

While spotting and bleeding during pregnancy is very common, it is key to listen to your body and be aware of other symptoms you may have along with the spotting.  Heavy bleeding or noticing any tissue passing can be cause for alarm.  If the bleeding is more similar to a menstrual period and followed by intense cramps in your abdomen, you will definitely want to call your OB doctor or make a visit to the emergency room.  You could be having a miscarriage and it is best to seek medical advice as soon as possible.  Keep in mind that you should always reach out to your doctor or midwife if you have any questions or concerns.  There is never a dumb question.  Remember, they are trained to maintain you and your baby’s wellbeing.
